Introduction
Effective psychotherapy approach to mental health treatment depends on the client views and beliefs, therapist experience, client’s diagnosis and the severity of the mental health symptoms. There is no ‘one size fit all’ psychotherapy approach to mental health treatment. This paper analyzes humanism and multiculturalism psychotherapies (Comas-Diaz, 2012).
Multiculturalism Psychotherapy
Multicultural psychotherapy is included in humanism. Multicultural psychotherapy and humanistic psychotherapy cultivate clients’ “capacity for choice, freedom, and transformation” (Comas-Diaz, 2012, p.437). However, many researchers are questioning the importance of humanistic psychotherapy for the ethnic minorities (Carter, 1995), while others support that humanism fits in perfectly with multiculturalism (Jenkins, 2001).
Other psychotherapy treatments include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal and other forms of ‘talk therapy’ that help individuals identify their problems and learn strategies on how to cope and solve their problem (NIMH, 2016). CBT is known to be one the most effective approach in treating mental health (Hoffmann, 2011; Hoffmann, Asmundson, & Beck, in press 2013).
Conclusion
The objective is not to advocate that one psychotherapy is better than the other, rather it is important to acknowledge how psychotherapy work in order to enhance the treatment and prepare the therapists to be efficient at their work. However, humanistic position is the center for all psychotherapists. Whether they are CBT, interpersonal, or humanistic therapists, the only mandate is to understand that psychotherapy is a humanistic bond between the client and the therapist involving strong interpersonal connection (Comas-Diaz,
