Doing research for this paper and choosing a Hispanic author or poet, was very frustrating for me. I wanted to look for someone that would write about how it was growing up as a Mexican American. And not only to talk about how hard it was have growing up (Hispanic) but to also included a different style of writing. After countless researches I encountered Gary Soto. Gary Soto was raised in Fresno, California, born in April 12, 1952. Many of Gary’s poems made literary magazines such as Ploughshares, Michigan Quarterly. He was well recognized, one of his best works was New and Selected Poems, a 1995 finalist for both the Los Angeles Times Book Award and the National Book Award (garysoto.bio). What made Gary Soto unique in many people’s eyes, was the techniques he would use in his writings/poems. He went on to explain “If you read my poems and stories, you might wonder which things really happened to me. As a writer, I like to make things up, as long as the actions of the characters are believable.” He also went on to explain “The joy of being a writer is to take things I see and hear and then rearrange them” (Gary Soto). Oranges by Gary Soto was one poem I came crossed that I really connected with. In the poem he goes on to talk about the first time when he walked with a girl was when he was twelve, on a December day with, two orange in his pocket. Later on the poem he goes on to explain “Breathing before a drug store. We Entered, the tiny bell Bringing a saleslady Down a narrow aisle of goods”. Following this moment he and clerk made eye contact “Knowing Very well what it was all About”. I have been in the same scenario before where I don’t have enough money to pay for what my girl wants but I have some goodies in my pockets that might just be enough for the clerk to give me a pass. ”. After reading Oranges by Gary Soto I felt good knowing, I wasn’t the only guy that had gone thru this same scenario. Love can make you do so many things, to go out of your way to make your significant other happy. Till this point in my life I have never been a person that is very into poetry. Doing this research paper really opened my eyes to not just keep my ideas in my head, but to put them down on paper and go with the flow. Many of the readings I read during the process of reaching a Hispanic author or poet, opened my eyes that not everyone has the perfect childhood growing up. I always taught writers and poets like Garry Soto just had the best childhoods growing up, with both parents living at home, with a nice houses and
