When the general public thinks of war, they think of fighting and death and gunfire. This is true, but only to some extent as war is much more. There can be happy times of bonding, there can be boring times of waiting, there can be unifying times of camaraderie, and there can be peaceful times of joy. Through his novel, Tim O’Brien clearly expresses this when writing about the Vietnam war and all the times he spent with his squad mates. All in all, through the poem “Under the Ocean”, this idea that war has many depths is well represented, through similar symbols and adages, and thoroughly shows understanding of the novel.
