Another point in the story where Satrapi helps the reader understand the book is in the chapter called “The Soup”. Marjane understood that there could only be so many ways to grasp the reader’s attention. This time Marjane would use the visual aspect to help the reader understand. In “The Soup” it starts out very happy showing that Marjane has escaped a “religious Iran” and plans to live freely. However this quickly changes, as we get further into the chapter. We see Marjane enter a home with all black walls. This gives a very gloomy effect to the story at this point in time. We think that Marjane is in the Western world and is going to be free of any injustice. But as she starts to notice the Western life seems to be in shambles as well. First
