Van Inwagen’s chapter on free will states that if determinism is true, only one future is genuinely open to us. He also says that free will is the ability to do otherwise, therefore, if we have free will determinism is false, hence, the two ideas cannot go together. Trying to solve this problem van Inwagen introduce three major positions. 1)Compatibilism: the idea “that free will and determinism are compatible”(p. 257).
