Analysis: Why Student Athletes Should Be Paid

Today, sports are no longer only about having fun; sports today are a business, and college sports are no different. In fact, the NCAA generates the third highest amount of revenue compared to all leagues around the world, though students are the foundation of the most prominent organization, student athletes are not treated fairly. The idea of receiving a free education is something few would complain about; but when you consider the circumstance, it becomes evident that many of these scholarships are not enough compensation. As an athlete and a full-time student it is tough to live day to day on meals and not knowing if you are going to have money till the end of the month. NCAA needs to revise the rules about scholarship compensation and also be more focused on athlete's educational needs. Those who do take on the tough workload, are expected to average 30-40 hours on school and sport activities not allowing students to make money when they are away from campus. While at ASU there’s a meal plan providing food for students athletes; however, when the team is off campus a student athlete such as I, is on his own. In this case, the Fall of 2015, ASU had a baseball tournament in Southern California, I remember going almost a day and half without eating because no food was provided by neither school, the last day of the tournament players went out to dinner after the game, however a few teammates and I were forced to go back to the hotel because we didn’t have money, on the way back to hotel Coach offered to buys us a few tacos, because the NCAA regulations state that students athletes may not receive any form of gift, myself and four other were given a two game suspension. This situation could have been avoided if the teammates had enough lunch
