The purpose of prohibition was to cease an era of social unrestraint. Ironically the prohibition of alcohol provoked the antithesis of what was intended; one consequence of prohibition was that it changed the drinking habits for the worse. While prohibition was originally intended to reduce beer consumption in particular, it ended up increasing the consumption of hard liquor. Alcohol became more dangerous to consume. Criminal organizations profited from Americans’ insatiable desire for liquor. Stills sprung up across the country and many people made a living during the Depression by supplying neighbours with moonshine. However, with all of the amateur distillers and brewers trying their hand at the craft, there were many accounts of things going wrong, especially due to alcohol poisoning. This is clearly evident as during the years of the prohibition, on average 1000 Americans died every year from the effects of drinking tainted liquor.
