Analyzing Adler´s Individual Psychology

1. The counselor’s use of Adler’s Individual Psychology demonstrated many of the listening and communicating skills that both Nystul and Waldo described. Towards the beginning of the counseling session the counselor demonstrated empathetic listening which Waldo described as listening respectfully to convey honest understanding. For example the counselor reiterated respectfully to where Gina was in her life to make sure they were on the same page. I also noticed how the counselor used minimal encouragers that Nystul described as a way to facilitate what the clients is saying without changing the clients line of thought. I feel that both these techniques that the counselor used were both strengths.
2. I feel that for the most part the video recordings description and demonstration of counseling according to Adler's Individual Psychology fit with the descriptions of the theory offered by Nystul and Waldo. A key component that I noticed in all three was listening skills. All three

I would like to help children and adolescents struggling with mental health disorders such as OCD, PTSD, Schizophrenia, etc. I feel that Individual Psychology has the potential to greatly help children and adolescents struggling with these types of disorders. By using Adler’s approach you are able to assess the child’s backroad such as birth order and early recollections to help reveal what may have lead up to or caused the disorder. For example, working with a child who grew up in an abusive home, by assessing their early recollections you may find that this type of situation is what contributed to their PTSD. Overall Adler’s approach has an optimistic view of the client’s capability and strength to change which I feel would be greatly effective in treating these types of clients. Some problems that I might encounter with using this approach are mental health clients needing more help than what Adler’s Individual Psychology can offer such as medical and psychiatric
