My first reaction to this work of art was intrigued to find out what the sculpture was and exactly what it means. The hysterical Matreial is a work of art that embodies communication love and emotions this bronze pillar features details of realistic details of figures and symbols that portray just that. The sculpture made me feel like intrigued and thrilled to find out what was the story behind it. The sculpture I viewed was a tall bold and bronze statue with a with a man and what appears to be another human on a column in a bold pose. The bold dark sculpture extends upwards communicating and overwhelming yet unthreatening presence. The sculpture illustrates a figure holding another by what appears to be the foot and the other figure looks like it has wings of some sort. The sculpture remains completely clear and to me it shows the emotions of not letting something go as if the figure on the ground is holding the other down so it wont fly away. …show more content…
From 1960 through 1964 Nauman studied at the university of Wisconsin. He studied math, science ,philology and art and physics. Nauman work is characterized by an interest in language, often manifesting itself in a playful, mischievous manner. He has a strong interest in setting the metaphoric and descriptive functions of language against each other. For example, the neon Run From Fear and Fun From Rear, or the photograph Bound To Fail, which literalizes the title phrase and shows the artist's arms tied behind his back. He seems to be fascinated by the nature of communication and language's inherent problems, as well as the role of the artist as supposed communicator and manipulator of visual
