A Wagner Matinee Throughout this short story, Cather’s background is the same as Clark, the character in the story. As a kid, Cather had to move to Nebraska at the age of nine because of her father had to change is job and start his own business there, which is a real estate agent. In the story, the main character Clark lives in Boston, but his family still lives in Nebraska. Her background with her father being a real estate agent shapes the view of Clark’s grandma coming to Boston to attend the settling of the estate of a friend.
