Jordan Sonnenblick’s empowering story, Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie, revolves around drumming prodigy, Steven. Steven is an outcast in middle school. He goes with the flow and has a calm life at home. That is the case until his younger brother, Jeffrey, gets diagnosed with cancer. His family life becomes chaotic, he can barely get up out of bed in the morning, and Jeffrey is dying. However, he puts on a straight face at school and spaces out during class. Nobody suspects anything unusual and nobody understands what he's going through. Life's not easy, that's part of the package. But, it's your choice if you want to succeed or not.
It all started like any other day. Steven was making breakfast for Jeffrey before school, and Jeffrey was being his usual annoying self. In that process, Jeffrey managed to fall out of his chair, smack his head on the counter, and get a massive nosebleed. Since the blood kept gushing, he needed to go to the hospital. Her sister didn’t show up and she only came at the end. Steven lost it; cancer killed his friend.
