Analyzing Undre's Speech

Undre’s Hooper’s speech about the painting entitled “the problem we all live with” was his speech for module 3. In the speech Undre described the painting and some history behind it. After watching it I have seen some things he did well and some things that definitely need some improvement. Overall I felt the speech could have been a lot better considering how powerful the content was. Undre speech was informative; he did inform us about the important details of the painting. These include what kind of painting, who created it, and when it was created. These details are vital because it gives an idea of the time period it was reflective of. He seemed a bit underprepared as well considering his moderate stops to read the lines. Undre also lacked vocal variety; he seemed to very monotone at times. It looked as if he was reading script verbatim. This caused his speech to very elementary. This might be good in terms of ease however in terms of creativeness and uniqueness it hurt him. He failed to really engage the audience with his vocals. I saw the speech as very monotone and it looked as if he wanted to fly through this speech by simply reading off of a script. He did everything without pausing very much which hurt him because it didn’t give him time to collect his thought and let the points sink in to the audience. I also believe these pauses would have helped him articulate his words better. I observed that Undre barely his body much less his arms. His body lacked interest. It was almost statue-like. Those negatives caused him to have no gestures which caused him to seem boring. One of biggest negatives I noticed was his “visual aid”. He didn’t have one; he simply described the image which is hard for the audience to really grasp the concept he is trying to convey. All of these negatives can be fixed in the future.
