The Irrigation System of the River Min (also known as the Dujiangyan irrigation system) was an extremely advanced irrigation system at the ancient time. It’s another UNESCO World Heritage site, and is still in use today to irrigate over 5,300 square kilometers of of land. Back before China was ever united as one, the governor of the Qin state, Li Bing, investigated the area around the river and found that it had been plagued by flooding in the summer and droughts in the winter, so Li Bing had to think of a solution to solve the problem. Instead of using a dam, Li Bing decided to use a levee to redirect some of the river’s waters when necessary. After the system was finished, no more floods ever occurred, leaving the people of the Sichuan area (where the Min River was) free of disaster. Today, modern scientists still admire the system because unlike modern dams where the water is blocked with a wall, the Dujiangyan irrigation system lets water go through naturally. We use paper every single day, but who invented it? Cai Lun was experimenting with wood pulp, and eventually came upon the process of making paper. Paper was an extremely convenient way of recording things, and could substitute silk for many applications. With the new invention of paper, the Chinese had a convenient writing material and a great trading material. When the Chinese traded it with other civilizations, it eventually spread to Europe and the rest of the world, giving us the paper we have today. Without paper, it would be extremely inconvenient to record things and write. We can be thankful for this innovation, as we use it every
