Describe the layout and function of the various kinds of dwellings used by the Ancient Romans in the cities and countryside.

Ancient Rome was a greatly divided society wherein only few were wealthy and powerful, while the majority of the population composed the lower classes and struggle to survive. These aspects directly reflected in the way the Romans lived. From the rich to the poor, their housing was divided in the following categories: Palaces, Domus, Villas and Insulae as will be described below.

Palaces - One of the most famous Palaces was the Domus Aurea, also known as the Golden House of Nero. This is where the emperors lived, in this case Nero. Located in the center of the city on 200 acres

“They were single-storey houses which were built around a courtyard known as an atrium” (Primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk, n.d.). With many rooms such as kitchen(Culina), bath, dining-rooms (Triclinium), bedrooms(Cubiculum) and rooms for slaves (Posticum). On top of that the Domus came with indoor courtyards, gardens and beautifully painted walls all leading into the main area: the atrium - as one of the most important part of the house, with no roof and rooms opening up off of them. This square roof opening called the compluvium, in which rainwater could drawing inwards into the impluvium, simply a drain pool.
