Ancient Sumerian religion left a mark on the Middle East. It influenced other civilizations through literature, cosmogony, and rituals. Religions that resemble their religion today are Judeo, Christianity and Islam. There were temples for each god or goddess. The temples were scattered through out the region and one in the center of each city. There also might have been Ziggurats, big pyramid type things with flat tops, instead of temples to worship the gods and goddesses in. Temples were staffed with Priests and Priestesses. There are tons of different gods and goddesses. The main ones are Enlil, god of storms and winds; also he is responsible for peace and harmony in the universe. There were different after lives and different genres most likely based on the economic class. Upon death family members would put belongings in graves. At death the spirit travels to the underworld. The spirit would then eat and drink dust. There were also different cities in the underworld.
Cuneiform (meaning wedge-shaped) was the main form of writing. It is also the earliest. Origins are traced back to about 8000 BCE. The earliest texts came from the cities Uruk and Jamdat Masr in about 3300 BCE. Cuneiform tablets are small tablets that were made out of clay. Some of the pictographs were used to represent trade goods and live stock. The Sumerians developed a numerical system because they were tired of writing multiple symbols while counting herds or something. Earlier signs were more linear with lines and curves. The symbols became more complex throughout time.
Sumerian women were not treated equal to men. Their right depended on their social status. The highest status could read and write and were given authority. Low status women had many children and were mainly housewives. Women sometimes milked the cows and made yogurt and cheese out of it. They also could become tavern keepers, scribes, singers, weavers and business owners. One of the lower classes could not have sex. However younger wives also known as junior wives were prostitutes.
