The Bank War was the name given to the crusade started by President Andrew Jackson in 1833 to devastate the Second Bank of the United States, after his reelection persuaded him that his restriction to the bank had won national support. The Second Bank had been set up in 1816, as a successor to the First Bank of the United States, whose sanction had been allowed to terminate in 1811. Numerous Americans despised the bank, particularly ranchers and land theorists who couldn't reimburse their credits after the agrarian market slammed taking after the Panic of 1819.
