He puts a down payment on a goat and brings it back home to his wife, Iran, who for the first time in the novel, appears to be happy with and proud of her husband. He then leaves the house and finishes his kills and not much later returns to his wife who informs him that a woman, who perfectly fits the description of Rachael, had come and pushed the goat off of the roof, killing it. In the eyes of Rick and Iran, this was a drastically cruel act proving their lack of empathy, but from the outside it can be seen that Rachael was showing her ability to care for other androids, in that she was seeking some sort of revenge for the death of her friends. While revenge is still ugly, it does provide evidence for an amount of caring for more than oneself, and also trying to make up for feelings of loss and grief, all allegedly exclusive human attributes. Deckard reacts Iran’s comment on Rachel’s behavior being needless, he responds, “‘Not needless," he said. "She had what seemed to her a reason." An android reason, he thought” (Dick 102). Some basic background on the cold war is that it started around the end of World War II. What lead up to the tension was during the war the United States and the Soviet Union fought together as allies, while still having a tense relationship. America was concerned of Soviet communism and Joseph Stalin, the leader of Russia, who showed an increasingly ruthless rule of Russia. On the other side the Soviets resented the Americans’ refusal to treat the USSR as a part of the international community as well as their delayed entry into World War II, which resulted in the deaths of tens of millions of Russians (Cold War History). After the war ended postwar Soviet expansionism in Eastern Europe caused many Americans to fear the possibility of Russia planning to control the world. Meanwhile, the USSR came to resent what they perceived as American officials’ bellicose rhetoric, arms buildup and interventionist approach to international relations.
