Andy Warhol created Marilyn Diptych in 1962 following Marilyn Monroe’s suicide. A diptych comprises two panels joined with a hinge. They appear to trace their origins to Late Antiquity. Inspired by this style, Warhol made Marilyn Diptych over two panels, each having 25 Marilyns arranged in 5 rows and 5 columns. The panel on the left is made of virtually identical portraits in bright colors while the panel on the right comprises 25 black and white Marilyns that fade out or have jarring ink smears. The piece was produced with acrylic on canvas using the silk screening technique. The image appropriated was a cropped publicity photograph of Monroe from her 1950s movie ‘Niagara’.
