While the spay/neuter programs and animal shelters made large amounts of progress towards humanely reducing the number of homeless animals, as cited previously, 6.5 million animals still enter shelters every year, with 1.5 million euthanized. While the situation improved since the 1970s, America needs more work done towards eliminating the problem of animal homelessness. Two major ways of solving the issue of animal homelessness exist: encouraging more people to adopt pets from shelters, and supporting spay/neuter programs nationwide. Animal organizations like PETA highly recommend adopting an animal instead of buying pets from breeders. Older pets especially need owners willing to open their homes to a new companion, as they are often overlooked in favor of younger puppies or kittens (“Spaying and Neutering: A Solution for Suffering”). While this means creating and maintaining programs like mobile spay/neuter clinics, education and legislation are just as important. According to PETA, even education as simple as explaining the benefits of spaying and neutering pets to friends, neighbors and acquaintances who are thinking about adopting or purchasing a pet can help keep the number of homeless pets down. Education chips away at people’s misconceptions about what spay/neutering does to animals, making them more likely to take the incredibly important step of getting the procedure for their animals. Talking to elected officials about passing spay/neuter programs in the area they represent also helps spread the benefits of spay/neuter (“Spaying and Neutering: A Solution for Suffering”).
