When people think of intelligence they only think of smarts, but there are a lot of different concepts that go into intelligence. One concept of intelligence is the emotions humans and animals feel. Even though some people think that animals can feel different emotions, they can; one of those emotions is pain. In the jungle, rhesus monkeys will fight other monkeys and leave horrible wounds, and in response, the monkeys will scream from the pain. During mating season, the rhesus monkeys will also rip out his opponent's testicles. The opponent will scream in pain for hours (Page 185). In both of these situations after a few hours the screaming will stop and the monkeys went out with their day. People think that since the screaming stops, that …show more content…
Even though some people can not understand how animals feel sadness, they do know that animals can feel joy and happiness. There are many examples of animals in both the wild and in captivity, showing happiness; one example is the gorillas that will sing in the wild. After a thunderstorm has cleared up and the jungle smells glorious, researchers have heard gorillas singing at the top of their lungs for no other reason than for joy (Page 193). A little off the coast of western Australia, dolphins will surf enormous waves. Researchers have tried to figure out the reason why, but all they could come up with is that they do it for fun (Page 190). Also, researches have watched as wild dolphins toss seaweed back and forth to other dolphins (Patent 51). People have watched crows trick gullible dogs into running around like crazy. The crows will call out a sound similar to a duck and watched with joy as a dog burst out of its home looking for the ducks (Page 192). To be able to have and express different kinds of emotions for different situations shows that animals do have some intelligence. Besides emotions, another concept of intelligence is how animals use different tools for …show more content…
Chimpanzees figured out that the best way to get the termites out of the mound is to find a stick, break off the stick to create the right length, and remove any leaves or side branches off to make a perfect tool (Patent 104). Chimps then use the probe to stick into the termite mound and wait for the termites to climb on the stick. Once the termites did, the chimps would pull the stick out and eat the termites right off the stick (Page n.p.). Other ways that chimps use sticks to too stick them into hives to receive honey, poke at dangerous objects, and clean other chimp’s teeth (Patent 105). The way the chimps used the sticks to solve different problems show that they know that need help and they searched around for tools to use. Also, the different usages of a stick shows that the chimp’s figured out with some hard thinking that the stick is more useful than they once thought. Besides cases of the use of tools in the wild, there have been many studies of animals using different tools to solve problems in
