In Ann Petry’s short story “Like a Winding Sheet”, the author presents the story of an African-American male in the 1940s, who daily-basis struggles with racial discrimination, cause him an alteration on his own personal beliefs and behavior.
The story is set in Harlem, New York, during a period where racial discrimination was very common in the United States. Johnson, the main character of the story, an African-American hard worker, passive married man, and who is always complaining about physical pain on his legs, who works the night shift in a plant is facing racism at his work environment.
