What are the structures in the skeletal system?
The skeletal system is made up of many structures. These include bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and joints. Each one of these play an important role in supporting and giving structure to the body.
What does each structure contribute to the functioning of the whole skeletal system and the whole body?
The first and a very major part of the skeletal system is the bones. The bones give shape to the body as they grow and undergo development. Bones have an outer membrane, beneath the outer membrane is compact bone in which canals run through. The canals carry …show more content…
It is made up of cells called chondrocytes. Cartilage covers the ends of the bones and keeps them from rubbing together. Cartilage acts as cushion between bones.
Ligaments are short bands made of tough flexible tissue that holds two bones together and helps support your internal organs. We have ligaments around our knees, ankles, elbows and your shoulder.
Tendons are another important part of the skeletal system. Tendons are a type of connective tissue. They are found at the end of a skeletal muscle and attach the muscle to the bone.
Joints are the part of the skeletal system that allows bones to move in different ways. There are two types of joints, moveable and immoveable. Four movable joints are the hinge, ball-and-socket, pivot, and sliding joint. A type of immovable joint would be the joints that the bones of the skull are held together with.

Some include osteoporosis, scoliosis, bone cancer (leukemia), and a bone fracture. Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which bones begin to lose needed mineral and can break easily. Another bone disorder is scoliosis. This is when your spine curves into an S-shape or C-shape, normally starting in the ages of 12 and 13 and being tested in those ages too, when treatment is most effective. Leukemia is the cancer of blood-forming tissues, stopping the body's ability to fight the infection. There are different types of leukemia with symptoms including chills, weight loss and pain in your bones, etc. When the bone is put under extreme pressure, it may fracture the bone, meaning it breaks.
How can you care for your skeletal system?
Not taking proper care care of your skeletal system ban lead to unwanted diseases and disorders. To prevent diseases such as osteoporosis, you must have enough calcium. A good source of calcium is milk. You can keep your bones strong and healthy with a balanced diet and consistent exercise. A lack of healthy food or too much caffeine can stunt your bone growth.
