Anne Hutchinson is what we consider a modern-day feminist. She questioned church leaders and challenged the authority men had over society. Anne Marbury was born in 1591, in Alford, Lincolnshire. Her parents were Bridget Dryden and Francis Marbury. Francis was a spiritual preacher in the Church of England. He complained about the poor teaching of the English clergy so he was imprisoned multiple times. Anne married William Hutchinson in 1612, and they had more than a dozen kids together. William was a very well known merchant in London and belonged to a wealthy family. Anne met Reverend John Cotton and listened to his sermons about Puritan leaders. She loved it and started to hold her own sermons in her house. Eventually Cotton was threatened to be imprisoned, so he fled to the Massachusetts Bay colony in 1633. Anne Hutchinson and her family left England for the Massachusetts bay Colony a year later. When they arrived, they bought a two-story house and William continued his merchant work. Anne became a midwife to the other women in the town and she started having meeting with them. It eventually became sermons about Puritan beliefs. They talked about the Covenant of Works, which is the role of good works and loyalty to religious law. Anne and Cotton talked about salvation by God’s grace, which is called the Covenant of Grace. Soon More women would join her meetings and even men would come. Anne became very popular and the religious leaders of the Bay Colony were not happy about it.
