The historical figure I chose to do was Anne Hutchinson. Anne was born Anne Marbury on July 20 1591 during the time of the persecution on Catholics and Seperatists in England. During the time of her life women were treated as an afterthought in society so she of course was home-schooled. She was born into a religious household, her father being a reverend named Francis Marbury. During her home-schooling, she was allowed to read only her father’s sermons and his theology works (Reuben 2014). Although there isn’t much background on Mrs. Hutchinson’s life before the puritan movement, I was able to find more than enough information of her trial and banishment from the Puritan community, which is what I will be focusing my paper on.
At the age of twenty-one, Anne married William Hutchinson, a successful trader with whom she had twelve children with during the years of 1614 and 1630. During this time the Puritan controversy between the Church of England and religious freedom was unraveling. During her trial, Anne refused to defend herself because she felt as if she had done nothing wrong and instead she tried to convince her complainants that they were wrong in charging her. Not long after her trial began, it ended. Anne’s sentencing was banishment. She was also imprisoned until the day her banishment was to be carried out. However, not only was Anne banished but those who supported her were banished as well (History of the Colony and Province of Massachusetts 2014)
