This work of art titled Lady Godiva, located at the Dallas Museum of Art was created by Anne Whitney in 1861 – 1864. Presented is an elegant, 11th century Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who had great compassion for the people of Coventry, seeking changes from an excessive taxation meted out to the citizens.
Anne’s work was inspired because of her unwavering interest in addressing social concerns, injustices, including slavery and poverty. This is depicted by Lady Godiva seeking better ways to impact her community; despite being a powerful woman, it is seen her gazing upward, recalling traditional representations of saints and holy figures, I assume to aid her in her quest in liberating the people from her husband’s excessive taxation.
