Annie is and continues to be a caring, determined, and stubborn person , she finally learns to allow herself to accept the past and open up to the future and for Helan. The theme of courage is very elusive in Annie. When Annie first meets Helen she is not threatened or afraid that she may not succeed in teaching Helen, but she is determined she will. Helen locks Annie in a room within the first day they meet this does not discourage Annie, but intrigues her. Once the situation was handled Annie says to Helen “You think i’m so easily gotten rid of? You have a thing or two to learn, first i have nothing better to do.”’ The kind of determination that Annie already has towards Helan is demonstrated. The kind of boldness forced on to Helan, is what will help Helan behave more like an ordinary person then an animal. The theme of determination grows throughout the second half of the book. Helen knocks over the ink jar on Annie’s desk which causes Annie to jump up and instead of reacting in an aggressive way Annie uses this as an opportunity to teach.
