Annotated Bibliography Assignment - Jenna Johnston
Residential Schools are a major part of Canada’s history which they are not proud of to this day. These schools were torture for the children attending them. The Canadian Government took many of Indigenous children out of their own homes and forced them to attend these schools; where they were kept away from their families and forbidden to practice their own culture and language. Instead, they were forced to speak in English and if they went against this then they would be severely punished. These schools were made to assimilate the children into thinking and acting like christians and to fill the minds of these Indigenous children into excluding their culture and language behind in their past.

In this book, it mentions the life of the residential school students and how they lived before they attended the school to their time at the school and to how the experience affects them today. Which I think is a very important thing to talk about since you will get to hear the perspectives of some of the students who attended these schools. I believe that them growing up before going to the school to after leaving the school will show a huge difference in how they live day to day. Based on living with family and learning the language and culture and way of life to going to the school and being taught their way of life is wrong, and then having to go out into the world again confused. Which is something I can definitely argue in my paper. The reason why I chose this journal article was because the title stood out to me. I never really thought about residential schools as reconciliation or racialization. In the article it mentions more history of the lifestyles of what the children had to experience. The author also states how the acts performed in residential schools is now called “cultural genocide”. Which I completely agree with, they forced children out of their homes to attend a school that forbids you to practice your beliefs or culture, the children were abused in a variety of ways, and some children tried running away but could have gotten stuck outside in the cold and froze to death and some deaths could have even been present on the school grounds. In the article it actually states that many children passed away while attending the schools “42% died annually”. It also talks about racism being an influence for the residential schools opening. I agree that some racism did probably impact the decision of these schools, because who wants to get rid of an entire culture? They have to have some racist thoughts on the people in order to make that decision. This article will help me learn
