In “Anti-black hiring discrimination is as prevalent today as it was in 1989” Lopez explains a new study done by researchers at Northwestern University, Harvard, and the Institute for Social Research in Norway. Although anti-Latino racism has slightly decreased the researchers found that anti-black racism has not changed since 1989. Data was collected from two kinds of experiments dealing with the hiring process. The first was with resumes which contained similar education and experience but had stereotypical black, Latino, and white names. The second experiments were in-person where applicants shared similar qualifications but were either black, latino, or white. The author is using causal claims because the data pulled from the studies proves that if the applicant is either black or latino they have a lower chance of getting a job. The author employs a sociological imagination from the data collected by using the unemployment gaps between black and white Americans making it a social issue rather than a personal trouble. The author also makes a connection and explains that racial wealth and income gaps are just as bad as before due to this discrimination. In “Personal Experiences and Public Issues” Mills states “Issues have to do with matters that transcend these local environments of the individual and the range of his inner life” the issue would be job hiring discrimination and the local environment is affected by the lack of wealth therefore crime is increased which affects the range of his inner life. The environment in which someone grows up in would definitely determine whether they become successful or not. The person would either work hard to get out of the community they live in or choose to let the community control
