There has been a rapid shift in medicine with antibiotic resistance becoming a problem or crisis in today's society. Seventy percent of the bacteria identified in the world is now becoming resistant to the use of antibiotics (Furber et.al., 2017). If this trend continues in the future of medicine, antibiotic resistance will become more of a pandemic worldwide. In the article written by Furber, the author discuss how antibiotic resistance is becoming a challenge in the health care system and being able to treat acute medical treatments such as: ear infection, toothache, and urinary tract infection is becoming one of the greatest challenge for healthcare practitioners (Furber et.al., 2017). . First, there will be a discussion regarding the …show more content…
Fuber et. al., discussed how midwives are shifting their roles in the health care industry with their clinical strategies and coming up with different ways of coming up with a program that promotes the appropriate uses of antibiotics (2017). This program will help improve the outcome of the patient health, reduce antibiotic resistance and the spread of infections as result of multi-drug resistant organisms (Furber et.al., 2017). The midwife's goal with their patients is to focus on teaching their patients about a healthier lifestyle, effectively controlling the infection and teach the patient regarding being compliant with the current prescribed regimen of medications. Antibiotics resistance has been occurring a result of the overuse and misuse of antibiotics, infection being poorly controlled and prevented in the healthcare setting, the failure to identify new antibiotics to treat the current organism, and poor hygiene practice by the patient or health care professionals. The medical staff should be performing good hand hygiene in between the patients, wearing protective equipment, insertion and removal of indwelling devices such as catheter (Fuber et. al., …show more content…
al., 2017). The invention of different types of antibiotics for multiple organism, has helped improve the outcome of the patient health and lifespan. Antibiotic resistance can result from many factors such as genetic mutations, or the transfer gene resistance from the bacteria through deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics by the practitioner. Midwife face the challenge as the pregnancy advances, the immunity becomes altered with the pregnant woman and there becomes an increase likely hood of infection in the respiratory or urinary system. Prompt treatment by the midwife and the appropriate use of antibiotics for the patient will help reduce the likelihood of antibiotic
