An example of anticipatory contrast would be if a clothing store advertises a weekend sale. In anticipation of the sale, people will be more likely to shop at the store when the weekend sale is happening because prices will be lower than normal.

An example of extinction burst would be when a child throws a fit over a toy he is wanting at a store. The mother stops paying attention and walks away with the child while he throws the tantrum, showing the child that he is not going to get the toy. As the child’s outburst over the toy becomes worse, later the child realizes his tantrum is not getting him the toy then he stops having the fit.
