These sons ended up killing each other in a battle for the city of Thebes. Now, Thebes is ruled by Creon, who is the brother of Oedipus’s mother and wife, Jocasta. Themes and Issues: In this play there is a power struggle, moral dilemmas and loyalty, consequences to actions and divine law vs. human law. The play revolves around the conflict between King Creon and Antigone. His refusal to bury Antigone’s brother sets the stage for a power struggle. Antigone defies Creon’s decree. Her actions challenge his authority. Antigone’s decision to honor her brother’s body raises ethical questions. Is loyalty to family more important than obedience to the state? Creon deals with the balance between maintaining order and respecting individual rights. His stance clashes with Antigone’s loyalty. The clash between divine and human laws lies at the center of the play. Antigone believes in the duty to bury her brother, even if it defies Creon’s. Creon represents earthly authority, while Antigone embodies a higher moral code. Their conflict highlights the tension between moral beliefs and civic duties.
