The source of Anzaldua’s suffering in her early years is a lack of a safe space to express her identity. From the moment she was born, Anzaldua was placed in a disadvantageous position in life. Born as a lesbian woman in a poor country, in a poor family, and raised through a culture that follows a strict patriarchal structure and archaic religious practices, Anzaldua had to stifle her defining characteristics that comprise her individuality for the sake of conforming to what is acceptable in her family and community. An individual’s family is supposed to be the ultimate safe space for a person to feel comfortable in existing as the true version of themselves, but Anzaldua does not become the best version of herself until she escapes her home.
