In “Lord of the Flies”, Jacks character represents evil and darkness where violent methods are used to maintain his leadership. Jack’s violent methods are displayed when Sam and Eric told Ralph that Jack will be hunting for him with “A stick sharpened at both ends" (198). The quote is a reference to the Lord of the Flies meaning that Jack intends to kill Ralph and place his head on the spear, as he did to the pig’s head. The viciousness of Jacks tribal practices and the brutality of their actions that consumes them leading to their disregard for human life. Similarly, in “Apocalypse Now”, Colonel Kurtz creates his own tribe and proclaims himself as their God. At, 2:33:43 the scene displays severed heads thrown on the ground by Kurtz, used as a sign of power and to scare his enemies. His excessive barbaric behavior breaks from recognition of basic moral code signifying his decent into savagery. Being away from civilization dehumanized the values of Kurtz and amplifies his violent features. Both, Jack and Colonel Kurtz chose to create their own civilization declaring themselves chief by giving in to their beastly desires to violence, power, and control by making decisions which challenge their basic moral
