In this essay, I will assess the cause and effect of the Apollo 11 Misson, such as how it played a role in the Cold War and technology improvement. This will be accomplished through the analysis of various primary and secondary sources. In 1961, John F. Kennedy wanted to land a man on the moon. Also, for that man to make it back to earth safely. He wanted to achieve this by the end of the decade. Before 1961, President Dwight Eisenhower created NASA standing for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. It joined together space research and an astronaut training program, for the exploration of space. NASA was running the plan established by JFK. Before the Apollo missions there was Project Mercury, whose goal was to prove they could send someone to space and return. Which was proven by …show more content…
This caused the next 5 Apollo missions to be unmanned. They wanted to make sure the safety of the equipment that was new would be safe enough for a man. Finally, the Apollo 10 mission was the first crew to go to the moon; they just did not land. They got close to the moon’s surface by 50,000 feet. This was huge for the United States because it was the first manned spacecraft to leave Earth's gravity and reach the moon. It also evaluated the Apollo command module system. Finally, Apollo 11 launched in 1969 only 8 years later from JFK goal. Neil Armstrong, a man who fought in the Korean War and trained to fly fighter jets for the United States. He loved flying and after the war he finished his degree in aeronautical engineering. He then went to work at Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory. Eventually worked at a speed flight station on Edward Air Force Base in California. He flew many experimental aircraft, like the X-15. He was invited to be an astronaut for NASA, but declined the offer. However, once John Glenn successfully orbited the earth, he applied to the program. The other two men with him were Buzz Aldrin and Michael
