Apollonia, an ancient city that once flourished now lays in ruins. This city of ruins is located 13 miles of the city of Fier, in present day Albania (UNESCO, 2014). This gorgeous archaeological site is on the tentative list to become a World Heritage Site. It is popularly known as Apollonia Illyria. Examining and reconstructing the past, this research paper will discuss the history, the people, and important buildings and their functions in the city of Apollonia. This city has much history hidden deep within its walls and the people that used to live there. What is left now is an archaeologist dream; ruins, artifacts, and graves.
The history of this ancient city is quite rich. It was established sometime in the 6th century BC (De Gruyter W., 2016). Many researches debate on exactly who founded this city, but many believe that it was either the Corinthians or the Corcyraeans (Amore, M., 2005). The original name of the city was most likely Gylax, named after Gylakeia, the man whom is thought to have led the colonist to this location (UNESCO, 2014).
