The Appomattox Campaign had five battles that led up to the surrender: White Oak Road, Sailor’s Creek, High Bridge, Five Forks and Appomattox Station. Union forces, were running out of time, and grew desperate to capture Lee’s army. Battle after battle, Lee seemed to be running out of time, Union forces were closing in; Five Forks, April 1, 1865, Lt. General Grant received the opportunity to threatens General Lee’s supply line from the South Side Railroad. Union forces attacked Confederates, assaulting it’s forces, brining its left flank down. Outside of Petersburg, Five Forks set the stage for the downfall of Lee and his Confederate army; Davis now becomes informed and word is set out for the evacuation of Petersburg and Richmond.
