U.S. Presidents, during WWI throughout the Great Depression, embraced several popular policy ideas from Progressivism, Nationalism, New Freedom, and Conservativism that shaped and formed deals to ensure and protect the nation’s economy and welfare. The largest expansion of U.S. Government and resources happened in 1890s-1920s. Roosevelt first 100 days of office, he created a “New Deal” plan that was organized to assist Americans to recover from the Great Depression. Roosevelt’s New Deal enacted the three R’s which were recovery, reform, and relief. Relief was to be provided temporarily to help the unemployed and suffering Americans. Roosevelt wanted to provide jobs, stimulate the economy, and organized the Civilian Conservation Corp. The CCC constructed hundreds of schools and hospitals as well as many other public projects. The Work Progress Administration (WPA) instilled jobs in roads, dams, and airports. Many of the programs and projects Roosevelt formed still exist today. To assist the economy to spring back from the depression, recovery was designed. The Agricultural Adjustment Act and the National Recovery Act were passed by legislation to negotiate restrictions on productions of cotton, dairy, corn, wheat, and tobacco. The agency in 1933 even slaughtered livestock and ordered crops to be demolished to meet the restrictions of production. The NRA pursued to drive up prices and limit the production of goods to improve competition. Reform keyed in on the direct causes of the decline and prevented disasters from occurring again. The Securities and Exchange Committee (SEC) was formed to prevent banks and cooperation from dishonesty and corruption. There are hundreds of roads, bridges, post offices, hospitals, schools, and dams constructed during this time and it is noticeable proof of the significance of Roosevelt’s policy. According to a Kansas History article, “Topics discussed include imperialism, United States president Franklin D. Roosevelt and forest conservation program in the United States” (Gresham.) Americans perceived the Federal Government differently post New Deal and look toward government programs to help in several current ways. Indeed, one of the tangible legacies concerning the New Deal was the capabilities for the for the U.S. to respond promptly in time of emergency or war.
