Aquatic physical therapy can be performed by a physical therapist assistant working under the supervision of a Physical Therapist, that treats the patient for pain management and physical rehabilitation by performing treatment and exercises in a water environment. In order to be a successful Aquatic PTA, it is essential to have excellent communication skills which are reading, writing listening, and speaking because it will be needed throughout the day. A PTA needs to be proficient in communicating clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. A PTA works under the supervision of a PT, therefore the PT is the first to see the patient for an Evaluation. For example, PTAs need to able to explain about how a certain exercise will help them access a better living situation and also when speaking to others who are involved with the patient treatment such as the patient’s family, caregivers and other professionals involved. Listening and speaking effectively with the physical therapist on the patient’s case will benefit the patient in his or her treatment. For example, the PTA should speak and explain if a patient has a sudden change or if the PTA thinks the patient would benefit from a more challenging exercise in the pool. Listening to the patient is very important because it shows the patient they are valued, this will create goodwill with the patient in having a good relationship which will help in treatment.
