Arctic Tundra is located in the northern hemisphere, and is known for its arctic desert-like conditions. The growing season for plants usually lasts upto 60 days. The arctic tundra has very low rain and dry winds, so there is constantly lack of water for life to grow. Another unique characteristic of this biome is permafrost, which refers to land which is permanently frozen because of very low temperatures. The permafrost usually does not have any cracks or pores, meaning that nothing can penetrate it. Each summer the surface layer above the permafrost melts a little, which is called an active layer. The width of the active layer depends on the location, the more north you go the more thinner the active layer gets due to the low temperatures.
