Do Energy Drinks Really Good For Health?
Worldwide consumption of energy drinks is exponentially increasing among people especially below the age of twenty five due to their stimulant effects on the central nervous system and the purpose of enhancing both the mental and physical performances. Energy drink companies are cramming all kinds of ingredients into their energy products. Energy drinks are highly caffeinated and contain herbal supplements [e.g., guarana], alkaloids found in different plants, vitamins [e.g., B Vitamins], sugars and taurine. According to the recent study, people who drink only caffeinated water had the same brain activities and responses as those who drink energy drinks. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system which alerts the body. It dilates blood vessels and so raises the heart rate and blood pressure. It dehydrates the body because caffeinated drinks have diuretic effect. People experience side effects which include sleepiness, heart palpitations, headaches, nausea, anxiety, panic attacks, irritability, allergic reactions, diarrhea, shakiness, trouble sleeping, vomiting and most commonly the jitters. Second, standard energy drinks contain a huge amount of sugar, which is addictive in the form of high fructose corn syrup or cane sugar. Although sugar, carbohydrate, is high in energy, too much intake can cause tooth decay, obesity, type two diabetes and insulin spike, that can result in a “crash” feeling after about an hour. Third, taurine is an amino acid that is naturally produced by the body but the ones in energy drinks are manufactured. Taurine regulates muscle contractions, heartbeat and energy levels.
