Are Wes A Hero

When you think of a hero the first thing you would think of is probably super powers and saving lives but my hero is much different. You would think that Wes is just a tennis coach with no greater importance, but to many others and myself he is a hero. He spreads joy and laughter wherever he goes and loves what he does more than anything. In the past two years he has impacted my life greatly and I am very thankful for all of the help and opportunities he has given me to become the best tennis player possible. Wes was tall, but not terribly tall. On hot summer afternoons spent on the courts at South, he wore a similar outfit every day. At first, I hated him because he was always the one who made us run and I was a terrible runner. My first day of tennis camp was one I couldn’t possibly forget. The first thing Wes said was, “All summer we fear the mile and today we are going to run the mile.” After a few weeks I decided I no longer hated Wes and tennis camp was not so bad. One thing I can thank Wes for is making me a better tennis player but also helping me meet some of my best friends. Meredith, Nancy and Madison were a year older than me at North and I had played with them the summer before. Gwen was a year younger than me at Otter Creek and I had beaten her during the middle school season at number one singles and we had become friends after. I had played against Anna and Andrea before since they went to Honey Creek, but I did not know them all that well. On the first day of my second summer at south he put us all on the same court and we quickly became good friends. About a week later we decided to make a group message and call it “Golf Camp”, inspired by Wes’ quote. On June 23rd, Anna, Nancy, Andrea, Gwen and I, were selected by Wes along with many other people to play in a tournament at Ben Davis High School. The tournament was played in 30-minute rounds and Wes had put me in five rounds in a row. After a few losses against high-level players in the hundred-degree heat I was tired. In my last match I did not really try and lost 6-0. We laughed the whole way home and
