It's possible that colleges are considered safe because of gun restrictions that are in place. If guns were allowed on campus it would be even easier to get into the college with out having to hide the firearm, it would make people feel scared for their safety on campus, and would add to illegal activities. The best way to assure safety and limit violence is to keep guns off campus; however, trained security providing protection for the campus should be armed. Students relying on security for protection is far safer than relying on instincts that the armed man sitting next to you would protect or harm you.
