“They promised us many things, but only kept one. They promised they’d take our land, and they did” (Chief Red Cloud). Native Americans lived in America long before explorers and colonists arrived and forced them into their “civilization” through violence, followed by a series of unfair trades and treaties. Not to mention, the unfair treaties with the Natives have been broken by the American government. In the reservations of the Native Americans, their funding from the government decreases, which puts them in poverty. Because the Reservations are losing money, the Native American children are unable to go to school. The unemployment rate is higher than the whole nation. “The existence of available jobs on the reservations is low, forcing unemployment of 35% to 85% (varies by reservation). At the same time, many Native Americans who do work full-time (on or off the reservation) still fall below the poverty level. It is not for lack of exuberance or effort on the part of Native Americans that these conditions arise. Many of the hardest working folks we know are Native American” (National Relief Charities). Ever since the Great Recession in 2009, the Native American unemployment rate hit double digits (Peralta). The Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Nation; which Barack Obama visited the summer of 2014, during his first trip to Indian country as president -- has an unemployment rate of over 60 percent, according to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (Peralta).
