People discovered that persons who had inherited a variant in a serotonin-transporter gene from the parents had a higher risk of falling victim to depression than others. The gene comes in two forms, one short and one long. As a result, researchers tracked 800 men and women over a five-year period. Each person had one "short" gene, and 33% of the group had become depressed over stressful life events. Their risk of depression significantly increased while they got older unlike the people with the long gene. On the contrary, 17% of the men and women with the "long" gene had gotten depressed, and their risk of depression as they aged hadn't changed. Surprisingly, that is not the only genetic flaw that can be a leading cause of depression. People who are born with an atypical gene sequence, otherwise known as G1463A, are more likely to suffer from
