Children all over the world come in contact with neglect and abuse by their own parents and the foster care system provides short-term homes for these children. By putting them into foster homes, they are given a safer and nurturing environment with less violence so they can focus on their education and their own development. While these kids are sent away, their parents can enroll in classes such as counseling, therapy, parenting training, substance abuse training, mental health services, and more (The Heritage Foundation.) At these classes they learn to control their actions and work at getting better at taking care of their child. Ultimately, the goal of foster care is for the child is to get back to family permanency by either reuniting with their birth parents, adoption, or guardianship. The foster care system is beneficial to children with no or broken homes because it gives abandoned children a safe place to live but it is in need of reform. In the United States alone there are more than 400,000 children who are in the foster care system (The Heritage Foundation.) Growing up in foster care can be challenging due to all the moving but for some kids it’s a good thing (Children’s Rights Blog.) Some foster families genuinely care about the wellbeing of the foster child and help the child grow as best they can leaving a lasting impact on the child’s life (Children’s Rights Blog.)
