The human body is distinct to every individual in our physical appearances and also our genetic make up. Each of our cells contains a nucleus and within each nucleus “there’s an identical copy of your entire genome.” (Skloot 3) In a sense, each cell in everyone’s body is a small but not extraneous reflection of ourselves. Therefore, we should have a say in controlling what we allow done with our cells in the same way we control whether or not we should donate a kidney or our blood. If I choose to donate my cells or even an organ, there is the potential for my entire genome to be “studied with such detail and precision that scientists know their every quirk” like HeLa cells.
