Farah Ahmedi needed to escape from war torn Afghanistan to a better life for her and her mother. Aengus wanted to find an unusual trout who suddenly turned into a glimmering girl. Jonas wanted to save Gabe, his little brother, from his father who would soon kill him. Though all of their missions were different, they were escaping to be saved or to find love.
Farah Ahmedi was determined to escape Afghanistan with her mother for a better life. They had been waiting by the gates to Pakistan trying to push through. As stated in the text, “I felt desperate to get through[…]” (Ahmedi 1). This shows that they were escaping to find safety and that it was going to be a hard journey. Another quotes is “[...]they were letting no-one through” (Ahmedi 1), both of these quotes show that she is desperate to get through. But they do get through because of a kind man who helps them cross through a goat path.

Jonas had a little brother named Gabe, and Jonas was trying to save Gabe from death. Jonas had discussed the plan with the Giver which was kind of like his guardian. The Giver would save portions of his food for the next few days and Jonas would take his dad’s bike because it had a place where Gabe could sit. This would all take place during a ceremony for the other children’s aging. Jonas would plant his bike by the stream as if he had fallen and passed away. They would grieve him and slowly chant Jonas. When this is all happening Jonas would take Gabe and ride out of the community to a safe place where Gabe would be safe. As stated in the text, “It would work” (Lowry 163). This showed that they had great believe that the plan would work. The author writes “[...] certainty and joy below” (Lowry 178). The quote shows that they had indeed succeeded and that they were now
