In the novel The Great Gatsby Nicks father told him “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the same advantages that you’ve had” (Fitzgerald 1). Just because people have different backgrounds and experiences doesn’t mean others should look down on them. I do not agree with this quote because criticizing someone makes them want to try harder to somehow make up for the advantages they’ve missed in the past. Just because someone grows up without certain advantages, it does not mean they will not succeed. Success is determined by will and motivation not background. When I think of motivation and success, I think of Muggsy Bogues, Steve Jobs, and Jay Z. All three of these people only had success on their mind.
First of all, Muggsy Bogues didn’t grow up with many advantages and was criticized his whole life, People would tell him he was too short or too weak, but he didn’t give up. Bogues had to overcome a huge physical obstacle. Growing to be only 5 foot 3 and being a …show more content…
Steve Jobs wasn’t always the multi billionaire. He once was just an everyday college student who had trouble following directions, until he dropped out. Jobs was adopted by a middle class family. He enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. He dropped out after just six months. Many people counted him out in succeeding in life after not getting a college degree, but he continued to develop computers. Jobs found he was very good at developing computers, so he and his friend Steve Wozniak started to develop them in Jobs’ garage (“Steve Jobs Biography”). When you start a company in your garage people don’t expect it to succeed.
