For my essay I have decided to write about my ancestor Pocahontas. She died at twenty one years of age. However, she did have a child before her death in 1617. Her child’s name was Thomas Rolfe.
Pocahontas was also called Matoaka and Amonute. She also later in life received the Christian name Rebecca. She was best known to the English as Pocahontas which translates loosely to “mischievous one” or “playful one”. Pocahontas was the daughter of Powhatan or as the English called him Wahunsenacah. Her father was the chief of the Powhatan empire which contained around twenty eight tribes from the Tidewater region.

Pocahontas was then taken from Jamestown to Henricus. At Henricus she was treated kindly and became a Christian. After that she was baptised under the name Rebecca. She was proposed to by John Rolfe and she accepted. Since John Rolfe was a distinguished settler the Virginia Governor, Thomas Dale, and Chief Powhatan agree to the marriage.
The marriage took place in 1614 and afterwards there was peace between both the English and the Native Americans as long as Powhatan was alive. According to one of the settlers Pocahontas was married once before to a man named Kocoum.
In 1615 Pocahontas and John Rolfe had their first child. Soon after in 1616 they moved their son Thomas, a Group of Native Americans, and Governor Dale to England.
