The First transcontinental railroad was built from Sacramento, California to Omaha, Nebraska. It was over 2000 miles long and took 6 years to build it was comprised of 2 railroads, The Union Pacific and the central pacific railroad.
The transcontinental railroad was Abraham Lincoln's dream. The dream was taken upon by 4 shopkeepers in Sacramento. And so the first shovel of earth for the first transcontinental railroad was shoveled in Jan 8th 1863. The start of a monumental task,of building a railroad from sea to shining sea. They had to tunnel through the Sierra Nevada through a path designed by and engineer call Theodore Judah. They were promised land and money for building tracks. But they couldn't get a cent before they had laid 40 miles of track and they didn't even have the supplies for 1 mile. Every single thing had to come by sea, and with the civil war on the rage and a journey of 4 months, few ships ever made it. The construction head was Charles Crocker, he hired a man named James Harvey Strobridge. He was the toughest construction boss on the west, he loft and eye in a powder blast and disciplines his crew with a pick handle.
